South Africa’s fastest powerboats will make their way to St Helena Bay Harbour on Saturday February 24 and Sunday February 25 for the second round of their 2023/24 national championship.
The races will form part of the St Helena Bay Water Festival, which will provide something for the entire family.
Current championship leader Keagan Frankiewicz will lead the F1 Powerboat contingent. He won two of the three races at the opening round of the championship and has a slender lead over his teammate Ronan Dixon, who claimed his first victory in his new boat at the season opener.
Local hero Morne Herholdt made his presence felt on his return to the Formula 1 fold after a long absence by claiming third place in the standings and will be looking to improve on that on his home waters.
The father-and-son pair of Nico and Michael Wessels will also make the trip from their Hartbeespoort Dam base, while John-Ross Duncan will make the trip from Witbank. Benoni’s Bruce Repsold suffered mechanical problems at the opening round but should show his true speed at the coast.
In addition to the Formula 1 boats, on-water action will also feature Hardbottom racing, Jetskis and several local youngsters who will be competing in the development class after receiving training from Morne Herholdt.
On-water action will not be the only attraction over the weekend. There will be plenty to see and do in the harbour precinct with live music, stalls, food and drink, and a children’s play area.
Tickets, which cost R100 for adults and R50 for children 12 and under, will be available on both days from 8am at the harbour.
