The going continues to be pretty tough for SuperSport United, whose move up the Premiership table is going at a tortoise pace.
Matsatsatsantsa a Pitori dropped points yet again as they drew 0-0 with AmaZulu at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night.
Beaten 1-0 by Magesi FC at the weekend, SuperSport were eager to get back to winning ways when they hosted Usuthu in their own backyard.
Coach Gavin Hunt, who was sent off in Polokwane, sat this one out as Andre Arendse and Grant Johnson led the way against the visitors, who walked on to the pitch cock-a-hoop following their 2-0 defeat of Cape Town City in their last outing.
But there were no goals in a 90 minutes that see-sawed, with both sides doing their best to get the goal that would see them banking the maximum points.
In the end, the two teams had to be content with the share of the spoils – a result that truly reflected the match.
Early on in the match, AmaZulu threatened through Tshepang Moremi, who broke through and was free on goal, only to be adjudged offside.
Chirstian Saile was his usual industrious self, the Congolese having gained a lease on life since joining on loan from Kaizer Chiefs.
He put the AmaZulu defence under pressure just after the quarter-hour mark, and the only way to stop him was via a foul – but the hosts failed to capitalise from the set-piece.
His strike partner, another former Chiefs player in Samir Nurkovic, attempted a header on 20 minutes, but that too did not trouble the Usuthu goals.
Nyiko Mobbie then attempted a long-range shot, but found Veli Mothwa in uncompromising mode in the Usuthu goal.
The visitors made their own foray into the SuperSport danger area on 33 minutes, but Siyabonga Ndebele did well to thwart the move.
There were few chances to write home about after the break as both sides rang the changes in an attempt to influence the direction of the match.
But the goals just did not come, and at the end, they had to be content with a point each.
SuperSport will need to be much better this weekend when they welcome an Orlando Pirates side that were the only winners of the matches played on Wednesday night.
The two teams clash at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.
