LAST weekend, Kimberley became the epicentre of intense competition as the Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) Under-30 Masters and Veterans Masters unfolded, showcasing the exceptional talent of the province’s top lawn bowlers.
The event, which drew in a large and enthusiastic crowd, provided spectators with some of the most exciting matches seen in recent memory.
The atmosphere was charged with excitement, with one player noting that the turnout and support from the crowd were unprecedented for an NCB play-off. As the players took to the greens, it was clear that this competition would be one of those exciting and memorable contests.
Mathewson carries on where he left off
When the competition got under way, CP Mathewson’s current winning streak continued as he triumphed in the Under-30 Masters final, following his strong performance at the BSA Masters. Facing off against Diann Cilliers, Mathewson’s experience and consistency were on full display as he emerged victorious in a well-contested match.
Cilliers, though he fell short in the final, impressed throughout the tournament with his skill and determination. His run to the final showcased his ability to compete at the highest level, and he can walk away with his head held high.
The battle for third place was a dramatic affair, with Driaan van Niekerk and Diddi Osmers fighting for the bronze medal. Rain poured down during the final ends, but both players kept their composure, with van Niekerk eventually claiming the third spot.
A huge thank you was extended to Sol Plaatje for hosting the Under-30 sectional play and providing a top-tier environment for the players. Also, a special mention must go to the dedicated markers who volunteered their time to ensure the tournament ran smoothly.
Some made the long journey from as far as Upington (400km) and Hanover (320km) away to assist. Their commitment to the event was integral to its success and greatly appreciated by organisers and participants alike.
In the Veterans Masters, Shaun Campher added another title to his name, overcoming Esly Lombaard in a hard-fought final. Campher, who has been in outstanding form this season, proved too strong for Lombaard, securing the 2025 NCB Men’s Veterans Masters championship.
Lombaard’s performance throughout the event, meanwhile, was exceptional, and he earned respect for his consistent play.
The third-place match between Stephan Enslin and Wilhelm Malan kept spectators on the edge of their seats. Both players displayed incredible skill, but it was Enslin who emerged victorious, securing the bronze medal in a thrilling contest.
Women’s Veterans Masters
For Susan Leeuwner, it was a moment of redemption as she finally claimed the Women’s Veterans Masters title. After finishing as runner-up in the Kalahari and NCB Singles Finals, Leeuwner defeated Tereace Schoeman in the final to secure her long-awaited victory.
Schoeman, who dominated her section, fought valiantly in the final but couldn’t quite overcome Leeuwner’s experience and skill. Nonetheless, Schoeman’s performance throughout the tournament was remarkable, and she earned much praise for her efforts.
The match for third place saw Laura Fouché face off against Louise Oosthuizen in a closely contested battle. Fouché’s composure in the tense final moments saw her take the bronze medal, edging out Oosthuizen in the process.
A Weekend to Remember
Beaconsfield Park Bowling Club played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth execution of the tournament, offering fantastic facilities and hospitality. The tournament not only showcased some of the province’s best bowlers but also highlighted the strength of the lawn bowling community in the Northern Cape.
With high-level competition, dramatic moments, and incredible support from all involved, the 2025 Northern Cape Masters proved to be a resounding success.
The event has set the bar high, leaving everyone eager to see what next year’s tournament will bring.
