IT’S THE month of love, and in this spirit, shortly before Valentine’s Day 2025, on Tuesday, February 11, at 5.30pm, runners and walkers alike converged at Diamantveld High School for a special 4km fun run/walk in support of the Kimberley SPCA.
The event was not only a celebration of love but also a testament to the running community’s dedication to animal welfare.
Participants donned their most vibrant red, pink, or white attire, adding a festive flair to the occasion. However, the real show of love came through the act of giving. While there was no registration fee, donations were graciously accepted on the day, with all proceeds going towards the care and support of the animals at the Kimberley SPCA.
And contribute they did. Donations ranged from bags of dog and cat food to snug blankets for those chilly nights to come, providing a soft spot on the floor of a kennel. Every donation, big or small, made a difference.
Additionally, cash donations were warmly welcomed, providing vital funds for veterinary care, shelter maintenance, and other essential services for the animals.
As the sun set on the Kimberley skyline, runners pounded the pavement with purpose, their strides fuelled not only by the thrill of the run but also by the knowledge that their efforts were making a tangible impact on the lives of animals in need.
For those who preferred a leisurely stroll, every step taken was a step towards creating a brighter future for four-legged companions. Little did many of the participants realise that in this selfless act for the welfare of the animals they too were being benefitted.
Research has shown that acts of kindness can lower stress levels by promoting the release of oxytocin, a hormone that helps reduce stress and anxiety. Also, engaging in acts of kindness has been linked to lower blood pressure, improved cardiovascular health, and a stronger immune system … and these are but two of many benefits.
In the end, the event was a major success. The collaboration between the Kimberley Harriers Running Club and Diamantveld High School ensured that more than 500 people joined hands for the running event and contributed generously to the SPCA.
The Kimberley Harriers Running Club as well as Diamantveld High School collected a whopping R9,438 in cash, along with a substantial amount of food for the animals.
The SPCA expressed their deep gratitude to the Kimberley Harriers Club and Diamantveld High School for their efforts in making the day a huge success.
“We drove away with a bakkie full of food,” said an SPCA representative, highlighting the overwhelming generosity of the community.
The Valentine’s Day fun run not only brought people together but also ensured that animals in need received the love and compassion they deserved.
