On February 15, Hoërskool Hartswater will once again host one of the most prestigious school athletics competitions in the region – the Top 20.
With last year’s edition drawing 480 athletes from 28 schools, anticipation is high for another thrilling showdown where only the best of the best will compete for top honors.
The Top 20 isn’t just any athletics meet; it’s an event where schools field teams of 20 elite athletes, each competing in only two events to maximize performance.
Points are awarded based on the Sasol Point Table, ensuring a strategic and fiercely competitive environment. The grand finale, a high-energy relay race, always delivers an electrifying climax to an action-packed day.
This year, defending champions Hoërskool Concordia will be back to protect their title, while other schools will be looking to dethrone them. With medals, trophies, and bragging rights at stake, the competition promises to be as intense as ever.
But beyond the medals, the Top 20 is about pushing limits, fostering school spirit, and celebrating the power of sport.
The Legacy of the Top 20
What started in 1986 as a visionary idea has grown into an institution in school athletics. The origins of the competition trace back to Mr. George Nieuwoudt, a life orientation teacher at Hoërskool Hartswater, who saw the need for a platform that truly recognised the region’s top athletic talent.
With the support of athletics coach Mr. Frans Bergh, school principal Mr. Muntingh, and athletics organiser Mr. Jackie Sherriff, the concept was transformed into reality.
Under the guidance of Mr. Bergh, who was known for his deep commitment to athletics, the school’s track programme flourished. His passion for the sport was mirrored by his daughters, both standout athletes themselves.
Together with his colleagues, he helped establish a competition that would attract top schools and set a new standard for high school athletics.
A Tradition of Excellence
Since its inception, the Top 20 has been defined by high-intensity competition and a carefully curated format. Each participating school enters a select group of 20 athletes, making every performance count. The event has become famous for its thrilling sprint races, where 100- and 200-metre heats fly past the grandstands, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats.
Over the years, the competition has built a reputation for its excellent organisation, from top-tier officiating to the warm hospitality extended to visiting schools. A hallmark of the event has always been the appreciation shown to officials, who are treated to a well-earned meal in recognition of their efforts.
Looking Ahead to the 39th Edition
This year, as athletes fine-tune their preparations, excitement is mounting for another unforgettable day of track and field excellence. Schools are strategising, coaches are refining their game plans, and competitors are gearing up to leave their mark on one of the most prestigious meets of the season.
With its proud legacy and unwavering commitment to showcasing the best in high school athletics, the Top 20 remains a symbol of sporting excellence. As the 39th edition approaches, the stage is set for another chapter in its rich history – one filled with speed, strength, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
