After finalising their new coaching squad for next season, Union-Milnerton RFC has added yet another milestone to their team.
The club now has a women’s division set to compete in the 2025 season.
This exciting development is set to enhance the competitive landscape of women’s rugby within the Western Province Rugby Football Union, and will be looking at making waves competition wise in the Cape Metropole.
In this move, Uni-Mil has joined forces with Up and Under Ladies Rugby, combining resources and expertise to create a unified senior team for the ladies.
Marc Viljoen will lead this new venture in head coaching position.
The collaborative effort between these two clubs aims to not only field a competitive team but also to inspire and empower women in rugby.
The programme will kick off next year, and Coach Viljoen is eager to get started.
“We’ve begun contacting all the schools in the area to introduce rugby training for girls and increase participation,” he said.
The initial training sessions will be held at the club, but as interest grows, the goal is to support schools in establishing their own girls’ teams to compete under their school banners according to Viljoen.
He envisions a pathway for aspiring athletes.
“Our aim is to create a seamless transition for players, allowing girls to join Uni-Mil’s women’s team in the league after finishing school,” he said.
This initiative not only fosters talent but also promotes a sense of community among young athletes.
With an emphasis on development, the union aims to focus on building fundamental skills and fostering teamwork and encouraging girls from diverse backgrounds to take up the sport.
