New champs crowned at Llandudno Sports Club

Llandudno Sports Club concluded an eventful sporting year with their annual Squash and Tennis Club Championships.

It was all change on the Honours Boards as for the first time in 10 years, none of the defending champions were able to retain their titles.

In the squash championships, the women’s Competition’s Cup final saw a gripping mother-and-daughter tussle, with daughter Demi Steenkamp holding off a spirited challenge from mother Vida van Rensburg, to win 3-2.

In the men’s cup final, Ryan Bluck showed his experience in holding his nerve to edge out a never-say-die Lochlan Williamson 3-2 in an action-packed match that drew gasps from the packed clubhouse for its high intensity and silky strokeplay.

Lochlan did manage to get his hands on some silverware, teaming up with brother Brody Williamson to win the Doubles Cup Final, beating two-time defending champions, Pierr Roodt and Jacques du Toit 3-1.

Rounding out the squash competition, Jamie Bell was crowned Junior Squash Club Champion, beating Jordan Pollard in the final.

In the tennis championships, Kelly Lumley won the women’s singles cup final against Megan Joubert, and Kai Brittnell oozed class in triumphing over Brendan Ross in the Men’s Singles Cup Final.

Kelly and Kai then paired up to beat Megan Joubert and Max Groeneveld in the Mixed Doubles Cup Competition.

The women’s doubles cup final saw Adrienne Fawcett and Megan Joubert overcome Lindy Slingsby and Katinka Steere.

And in a thrilling match-up between father-and-son duos in the men’s doubles cup final, Bob and Max Groeneveld clinched the title defeating Andy and Tom Sutcliffe in a nail-biting tie-breaker.

Jenna Fawcett was awarded The Peter Holling Trophy in recognition to her service to the club, captaining our Ladies League team and showing a real passion for our club’s Juniors Tennis coaching clinics.
