The Kronendal Retirement Village knitting club received a number of donations from the Hout Bay community in support of their blanket drive.

The group of seniors spent their time knitting and crocheting blankets for residents of less fortunate old age homes during Cape Town's bitter winter months.

Their efforts to spread warmth were recently highlighted in Sentinel News, and the response from the public has been overwhelming ("Warmth in every stitch", Sentinel News, May 28)

Angie Long, a member of the Knitting Club, expressed her gratitude and excitement for the community's support.

"Since we saw our request featured on the front page of Sentinel News, we have had the most amazing response," she said.

The club’s need for materials spurred community members to contribute, with one anonymous donor noting, "This is amazing, and we felt we needed to get involved, not for the fame or publicity, but because true compassion for each other is unfolding before your eyes.”

This anonymous donor highlighted the personal connections that bind the people of Hout Bay, and said: "Think of it this way, they are in a home, caring for others in a home. Those are people – grandparents, parents, uncles, family or friends – that they are caring for. They can be enjoying their retirement, but instead, they are trying to make Hout Bay a better place.”

In a heartfelt letter addressed to the community, Ms Long wrote: "Dear Hout Bay, the Knitting Club from Kronendal Retirement Village would like to extend our heartfelt thanks for the wonderfully generous donations of wool we received last week. Thanks to your kindness, we are now able to continue knitting and crocheting blankets for our friends in other retirement homes. The joy and excitement when the bags and boxes of wool arrived were truly heartwarming — it felt just like Christmas had come again!"

She added, "Your thoughtfulness and support mean the world to us and to those who will be warmed by the blankets we create.”

For those who want to continue contributing, the Knitting Club welcomes donations at their premises located at 55 Kronendal Retirement Village, Victoria Road, Hout Bay, or you can contact Ms Long directly at 082 544 7460.
