A group of volunteers in Imizamo Yethu (IY) has taken matters into their own hands by cleaning up their neighbourhood and educating others about the importance of keeping the area clean.
The IY Ukuphila Community Cleanup Crew is made up of local residents who are encouraging a cleaner, healthier environment. Their efforts have already led others to join the initiative.
The group has been tackling known dumping hotspots and addressing sewerage spills along the roads – entirely on a volunteer basis. They are now appealing to the public for donations of cleaning materials, equipment, or any other support to help keep IY clean.
Resident Joseph Mlisi, who lives near a long-standing illegal dumpsite, said the group has made a big difference in the area.
“This place was covered in rubbish, but ever since the cleanup crew started working here, I have never seen it look this good,” he said. “They don’t fight with people—they speak to them, show them better ways to dispose of waste, and that changes how people act.”
Mr Mlisi called on the broader public to support the crew, which has become a regular and welcome presence in the community.
