Starting Friday, November 8, the City’s Water and Sanitation Unit will begin extensive sewage infrastructure maintenance work on Margaret Mncadi Avenue in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The maintenance work will entail desalting sand and other foreign particles that are blocking the 3.5 kilometre sewage system and manholes on Margaret Mncadi Avenue, formerly Victoria Embankment.
“The maintenance work is expected to be completed in four weeks. Motorists are hereby advised that the centre lane of the eastbound carriageway of Margaret Mncadi Avenue between Joe Slovo Street and Dorothy Nyembe Street will be closed to traffic from November 8 to 22,” said the City’s Communication Unit.
The maintenance work is expected to be completed in four weeks.
In addition to the closure of the central lane, there will be no kerbside parking accessible in the impacted area during this time.
The repair is important because foreign materials choke the system, causing blockages and spills into the harbour at Lavender Creek, which has caused outrage among the yachting community and environmentalists.
“Residents and businesses are urged not to misuse infrastructure as their behaviour has long-term consequences. Wastewater that flows through this pipeline comes from parts of the city centre, Berea, and Umbilo areas.”
Another road closure that is disrupting traffic in Durban is a bridge collapse.
Traffic is significantly disrupted along the N2 southbound at Amanzimtoti on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, following the partial collapse of the Ezimbokodweni River Bridge.
Ward councillor Andre Beetge stated that traffic is being routed through other routes, while Sanral assesses the damage.
