Luke Fleurs murder trial is expected to get under way in the high court in Gauteng on Wednesday. The matter was previously postponed so that the National Prosecuting Authority could wrap up its indictment against the accused.
The Kaizer Chiefs defender was shot during a botched hijacking in Honeydew in April last year.
At the time, IOL reported that Fleurs had been driving his red VW Golf 8 GTI and stopped at a petrol station on 14th Avenue.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, while waiting for a petrol attendant, two armed men approached Fleurs and forcibly removed him from his car.
He was shot in the upper body while one of the suspects got into the Golf and sped off.
Fleurs was rushed to a medical care centre where the 24-year-old soccer star was pronounced dead.
Police arrested six suspects in connection with the murder. They were traced to Slovoville in Soweto while Fleurs' car was found stripped.
The suspects face charges of murder and hijacking and are believed to be linked to a syndicate responsible for a number of hijackings in the province.
