A new rugby academy wants to bring some positive changes to Hout Bay.
The Hout Bay Honey Badgers Rugby Academy for boys and girls from Grades 1 and 2 scrums down at Kronendal Primary School fields every Monday.
Ed Nisbett, a Bishops PE teacher and level-2 rugby coach, launched the academy earlier this month.
“Rugby really has the power to unite people, and I wanted to introduce it to children in Hout Bay who had never played the sport before. It’s about creating a safe and fun space where kids can exercise, laugh and feel like they belong.
“What inspired me to start this initiative was that there was a need for a community rugby club in Hout Bay. There’s so much talent here in Hout Bay, Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu that we should utilise.”
He would like to extend the programme to high school level.
“We have started introducing the sport to kids who have never played before, so it’s really incredible to see their reactions and excitement when they step onto the field,” he said.
Camilla Wilson’s two boys are part of the academy, and she said she had noticed a boost in their confidence.
“My kids run onto the field with the biggest smiles, ready to play and learn. It’s more than just rugby, it’s about belonging and laughter as well,” she said.
“Kids from all over Hout Bay come together and play on level playing fields. His assistant coaches include dads and brothers of the younger players, who all have such a warmth and kindness about the way they interact with the kids.
“On the days I can, I love going along and watching my boys play.”
Ms Wilson encouraged others to support the academy, saying, “Let’s help them continue changing lives and helping our kids to thrive one try at a time.”
Mr Nisbett said the next steps included seeking sponsors, expanding the programme and “building a legacy for the community”.
“We are kicking off our new season with a free session for all boys and girls from Grade R to Grade 3 on Friday January 31.”
