Hout Bay Primary School’s toilets were vandalised during the second break-in in four months.
Hout Bay Primary School in Imizamo Yethu is again appealing for help with repairs after it was burgled and vandalised for the second time in four months.
The latest damage was discovered by the school’s guards when they arrived for their evening patrols on Monday April 1, according to principal Nobuntu Mayekiso.
Late last year, the school was left without hot water following a break-in over the December holidays (“School crippled by theft, vandalism,” Sentinel, February 2).
“Our guards who were coming on night duty discovered that the school was vandalised. It must have happened during the day. All the learners’ toilets were damaged, and they need to be fixed. The vandals also stole the doors and the outside fence,” Ms Mayekiso said.
“They took electricity cable and even broke the toilet pots and urinals. We have one ablution facility that still works, but its not enough for the whole school.
“These acts of vandalism are very upsetting. I have reached out to the Safe Schools cluster programme for assistance in the meantime. I will have to reach out to the City of Cape Town too.”
Ms Mayekiso said she planned to report the break-in to the police this week.
Western Cape Education Department spokeswoman Millicent Merton said the damage and the school’s security needs were being assessed.
