It was supposed to be a day to remember for a pupil attending her first day at Hangberg Pre-Primary School. Instead, she will remember it as the day her 46-year-old father was murdered.
The shooting outside Sentinel Primary School on Wednesday morning, has left the community in complete shock.
According to a witness, who wished to remain anonymous, the incident unfolded in Atlantic Skipper Road, alongside the Sentinel Primary School.
“It’s a guy believed to be from Hangberg. He dropped his child off and then one of the teachers called him. This is when the drive-by occurred and he was shot twice in the head,” the witness said.
“I feel sick to my core and I can’t imagine the trauma for the little ones or his own child for that matter.”
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk, said when police arrived on the scene, they found the man on the pavement with a wound to the head.
Police have not yet confirmed the man’s identity.
“The victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died due to injury sustained,” Captain Van Wyk said.
Ward councillor Roberto Quintas offered his support to both Hangberg Pre-Primary and Sentinel Primary, confirming that trauma counselling was already being provided to pupils and staff.
“I condemn in the strongest terms any type of violence, and most of all, public violence that will contribute to the fear and trauma experienced by children and adults in our society,” Mr Quintas said.
Captain Van Wyk said the suspects were still at large and police are calling on anybody with information to come forward.
