As authorities await DNA results, speculation and uncertainty continue to grip Hangberg following the discovery of a decomposed body hidden inside a cupboard on Tuesday, February 17, with fears mounting that it could be missing teenager Amiena Swano.
Amiena went missing on Valentine’s Day, marked on February 14, a few days before the gruesome discovery of a decomposed body was found wrapped in a nylon bag inside an old cupboard in an abandoned house near the Sea View Flats.
While whispers of potential identities circulate among residents, DNA testing is set to provide answers that the community seeks.
One resident, who chose to identify herself only as Lucille, expressed her concerns over the state of the community. “I have already heard three possible names that could be inside that box, and quite honestly, I only think it could be one, but I am not willing to say,” she said.
Lucille mentioned that before the gruesome find, Amiena’s disappearance had not been extensively discussed.
“We heard a girl was missing in the area, but it wasn't spoken about as much as now. When people heard they found a body, then everyone suddenly started speaking about Amina, who was missing,” Lucille said.
The Hangberg community are pateintly awaiting the results from a DNA test to reveal the indentity of the body found in an abandoned house, hidden in an old wooden box.

Provincial Police spokesperson, Constable Ndakhe Gwala, confirmed that there were no new developments in the case, and that they are still awaiting DNA results. “Investigations are still ongoing.”
