A feeding programme at Llandudno Primary School continues to make an impact beyond its classrooms through its ongoing Sandwich Day outreach initiative.
According to principal, Alexander Molteno, the project was designed to support pupils in need while "nurturing values of generosity, empathy, and community service among its pupils".
"Sandwich Day is a regular programme in which pupils are encouraged to prepare and donate sandwiches to neighbouring schools, ensuring that children who may arrive at school without lunch are provided with a nutritious meal," Mr Molteno said.
Each week, a different grade takes responsibility for the programme, allowing all pupils to play an active role throughout the year. On Sandwich Day, usually held on a Wednesday, pupils will bring ingredients such as cheese, peanut butter, jam, tuna, and other fillings to school, said Mr Molteno.
Together, they assemble sandwich packs which are then delivered to a partner school within the local community.
This week, the Grade 4 pupils prepared sandwiches that were donated to the Oranjekloof Moravian Primary School.
"The experience offered pupils a hands-on opportunity to serve others while understanding the real-life impact of their efforts. While the provision of food is central to the project, Sandwich Day extends far beyond that," Mr Molteno said.
"The initiative helps pupils to develop compassion and empathy, practise teamwork and planning skills, and understand the importance of shared responsibility."
He further added that by rotating the duties across grade levels, the programme fostered a "culture of giving and inclusivity" within the school.
"Sandwich Day reflects a broader movement seen in schools across South Africa, where simple acts such as sandwich drives play a powerful role in supporting food security, promoting civic responsibility, and strengthening connections between schools, families, and communities," Mr Molteno said.
