The annual Buddy Book Project took place at Llandudno Primary School throughout last week, from Monday, November 24 to Friday, November 28 .
At the beginning of the term, each Grade 7 pupil was paired with a Grade 1 buddy in a mentorship partnership designed to encourage "friendship, empathy and literacy", said principal Alexander Molteno.
He said the project has become a hallmark of their school community, continuing "to blend creativity, mentorship and emotional intelligence in a uniquely meaningful way."
"Over several weeks, the school grounds buzzed with the joyful energy of these pairs as they played, talked, and discovered one another’s personalities, interests, and dreams. What began as simple introductions soon developed into heartfelt bonds," he said.
Grade 7s embarked on a project which involved writing, illustrating, and designing personalised storybooks, featuring their buddy as the hero.

The older pupils crafted storybooks that aimed to capture the essence of each Grade 1 child, showcasing their quirks, hopes, favourite games and even imaginary adventures.
The project culminated last week in a celebration which saw Grade 7 pupils presenting their finished books to their Grade 1 buddies and reading the stories aloud.
“It pushes our Grade 7s to listen, to connect, and to create something thoughtful and meaningful for someone who is just starting their academic journey. It teaches them that writing is not only about language, but it’s also about empathy, communication, and purpose,” said Marzanne Scheepers, senior English teacher.
“The excitement in the Grade 1 classroom was unmistakable as the younger learners opened their books, recognising themselves in the pages. The project not only inspired creativity but also strengthened the bond between the two grades, creating memories that will last long after the school year ends,” said Kaylagh Macfarlane, Grade 1 teacher.
