Support has been pouring in for the well-known Veldt restaurant after it was gutted by a fire last Friday, December 14.

Veldt restaurant, which opened earlier this year in Hout Bay's Main Road, became a popular hangout and braai spot for the community, who were shocked to see flames bursting out of the spot.

Veldt replaced another popular restaurant after it closed its doors back in October 2024.

Tallulah Hoyte from the restaurant started a Back-a-Buddy campaign to find support for the staff affected by the fire.

"We are devastated - still in shock, still taking in the reality of what has happened — but profoundly grateful that no one was hurt. In the midst of this heartbreak, we’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, concern, and the countless offers of help," Ms Hoyte said in a social media post.

Veldt restaurant's menus featured items such as wood-fired and smoked dishes made from organic grass-fed meats, including premium cuts like Karoo lamb.

"Over the next few days, we’ll take time to assess the situation and figure out our next steps. We’re so sorry for all the bookings we’re unable to honour, and we appreciate your understanding as we find our way through this difficult moment," Ms Hoyte said.

The fire has completely destroyed the inside of the Veldt restaurant.

The fire at the restaurant affected the staff, as their daily lives were placed on hold while the situation was assessed.

Restaurant management is aiming to raise R150,000 to fund the December salaries for their staff, with the intention of ending the year on a high note.

To date, the campaign has already raised just over R40 000, with support streaming in from all parts of the world.

"In the uncertainty of it all, we kindly ask for your support towards the staff salaries for the upcoming month to help us come back even stronger than before. We are incredibly grateful that no one was injured during the event and thank everyone who has been sending their support our way and continues to offer their help in this situation," Ms Hoyte said.

Adam Greyers from Hout Bay said the restaurant was known among the locals for "great food and even better company".

"I was passing the restaurant and we saw huge clouds of smoke coming from the building. My son actually asked what they were cooking, but the place was on fire," he said.

"Such a great establishment that we hope will make a comeback."

Amelia Fischer said she last visited the restaurant two weeks ago, meeting friends for a drink and a meal.

"It's always such a vibey place, and it fits so well into Hout Bay. This is such a shock, been there only a handful of times, but I can safely say it was turning into a favourite," she said.
