The discovery of three bodies in Imizamo Yethu on Tuesday evening has left residents in shock and fear.
Police have launched an investigation after the bodies of three men were found in a silver Hyundai i20 behind the Outreach Gospel Church at Holomisa Square around 11.45pm. All three had gunshot wounds, according to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut
"The motive for the triple murder is yet to be established; however, extortion-related activity has not been ruled out as a possible factor. Detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit are pursuing all leads in an effort to identify those responsible and bring them to justice," Colonel Traut said.
Community leader Kenny Tokwe said a dark cloud was hanging over IY at the moment, with the latest gruesome discovery leaving many shocked and asking many questions at the same time.
"There is shock and fear, but this latest incident has caught everybody by surprise, and we also want to know why this is happening in our community," he said.
Mr Tokwe said there were not many details about the victims, but one of them is believed to have been a teacher at a school. "If that is the case, this is very sad indeed, and the area feels sad as well," Mr Tokwe said.
Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, strongly condemned the "senseless act of violence", describing it as a "callous disregard for human life".
“The level of violence displayed in this incident is deeply concerning. We urge community members to work with us by providing any information that could assist in tracking down those behind this crime,” Lieutenant General Patekile said.
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, said she was "appalled and deeply saddened" and condemned the killing.
"This heinous crime reflects a blatant disregard for human life and has no place in our society," she said.
Police are calling on anyone with information regarding the incident, or who could possibly assist in identifying the deceased, to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the My SAPS mobile application. All information will be treated confidentially.
