More than 20 young skaters from Ziyaad’s Skate School took part in the WCUD skateboarding event, earning prizes and showing off their skills at the Eyethu Hout Bay Skatepark on Saturday, September 20.

Founder of the skate school, Ziyaad Davids, said the energy was palpable, and the kids were thrilled to receive prizes, including caps, bags, socks, and t-shirts.

The day began at 10am with a park clean-up, followed by an exciting skate jam at 11.30am. Keerin Noah, Wonga Lucas, Jennifer Louw, Marcy, and members of a skate-inspired clothing brand guided the participants, helping them showcase their skills while promoting teamwork and community engagement.

“The event was made possible thanks to Sealand and Vans, whose support helps create meaningful opportunities for youth. Events like these really help us move forward in our mission to use skateboarding as a tool to create opportunities and positive experiences for our youth,” said Mr Davids.

While the day was primarily a celebration of talent and community spirit, there were a few minor incidents involving older youths taking items from some of the younger skaters.

Organisers took to Facebook to explain that these were isolated cases and had been addressed, with all children ultimately receiving their prizes and returning home safely.

“It’s just older skaters who felt left out because they didn’t receive anything from the prizes VANS gave,” said Mr Davids.

“We focus on the positive energy and look forward to creating more opportunities for our youth in the Hout Bay community."

The event highlighted the power of collaboration, bringing together Ziyaad’s Skate School and other businesses to provide an inclusive and inspiring experience for the next generation of skaters, said Mr Davids.

The skate school supports up to 30 youngsters from Hangberg and Imizamo Yethu, helping them develop skills, confidence, and a sense of community.
