A fire at Koraal Court, in Kudu Avenue, in Lotus River, left tenants in “total devastation” on Thursday April 3.
Jenny Johnson contacted Southern Mail and said, fortunately, her aunt Lillian Darries, 84, was not injured and her brother Gregory Jones had to pick up the pieces after a huge fire started at their neighbour's flat.
Ms Johnson said her aunt inhaled smoke, and she will be staying with family members until the flat has been cleaned up. “The front section of the flat was affected, and the carpet had to be ripped out in the lounge after the firemen hosed the fire. The front bedroom cupboards were burnt. The back section, where my aunt’s bedroom was, and the kitchen and bathroom were unscathed.”
Ms Johnson referred us to the neighbours where the fire started, but a family member declined to comment as she said they were still too “traumatised” after the incident.
Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Fire Services, said the emergency call was received at 4pm, and the blaze was extinguished at 5.30pm.
“The cause is yet to be determined, and no persons were injured. Two flats and two informal structures were destroyed, and four flats were partially damaged.
Mr Carelse advised that in case of an emergency, report it immediately to the PECC (Public Emergency Communication Centre) by dialling the emergency number: from a landline 107 or a cell phone 021 480 7700. Provide enough information to the emergency communicator, such as what is burning, the street name, suburb, landmarks (church, garage, shopping centre) and if people are trapped inside
