An educare centre in Hout Bay celebrated 20 years of enriching and impacting the lives of the youth in Hout Bay last weekend.

The Angel Starfish Educare, a registered NPO in Penzance Avenue, employs five teachers and two additional support-staff members and caters for 140 disadvantaged children in Imizamo Yethu, according to their website.

Founded in 2005 by Elaine Maloney, who at that time was principal of the Whiston Willis Community Primary School in Liverpool, the educare has grown from a handful of children being supported in a wooden shack in Imizamo Yethu to a fully-equipped facility that currently accommodates 140 children, according to manager, Jamie-Lee Jacobs.

Each child receives two healthy meals a day thanks to several individuals and organisations.

"At the children's party, each child received a special 20-year T-shirt and a pair of Crocs sponsored byseveral donors in the UK and Switzerland. The celebration also honoured our long-time donors and supporters over the years," Ms Jacobs said.
