A young pupil supervisor at Kroenendal Music Academy (KMA) took part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour last Sunday to raise funds for the school.

Kama Maxesibe tackled the 109km route to raise money for the renovation of the music academy's new premises, said director and conductor Dwyn Griesel.

KMA is a non-profit company that provides music lessons to disadvantaged children in Imizamo Yethu and Hangberg. It will soon be moving to Bergvlei, an 11 432m2 smallholding in Hout Bay Main Road, opposite Imizamo Yethu.

Besides being an avid cyclist, Kamva enjoys producing music.

"I'm usually a stay-at-home person. If I'm not out cycling, I'm often indoors listening to a lot of music or busy with school stuff. I first got involved at KMA at the beginning of 2024, as a pupil," he said.

"The last time I competed was in 2020, just before the pandemic. What inspired me to do the fund-raiser was the joy it would bring the kids and everyone at KMA. I became motivated to see us speed up the building renovations so we can move into our forever home as soon as possible and quickly settle in.

"The rooms need to be cleaned and rejuvenated, and we need to do some landscaping outside. We also need to do a lot of clearing," he explained.

Last week was Kamva's third attempt at the cycle tour, and he did it solo. He found this year's cycle tour more challenging as he felt he hadn't trained as hard.

"I really enjoyed this year's race, especially when I was passing Hout Bay, my home ground and seeing my KMA people, it propelled me to push harder."
