BELLVILLE South police registered a case of culpable homicide for further investigation after three people were killed and 11 rushed to hospital after a taxi collided with a car yesterday morning after 8am.
Traffic was heavily backed up on Robert Sobukwe Road between Radnor Street and Symphony after a quantum taxi carrying passengers collided with a blue Kia.
The incident took place next to the University of the Western Cape and resulted in road closures while emergency services attended to the scene.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed the incident and said that the circumstances surrounding this incident are now under investigation.
He says: “Bellville South police responded to a complaint on Wednesday 5 March 2025. Upon their arrival in Robert Sobukwe Drive at about 8.30am they found a Toyota Quantum and a Kia involved in a collision.”
“Further investigation revealed the bodies of three females who sustained fatal injuries. The victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel."
Furthermore, 11 victims were transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

A video of the horrific scene started making the rounds on crime groups and social media.
The video shows the Toyota Quantum smashed on its side against the fence on the pavement while two bodies can be seen, one lying on the ground next to the pavement with the face covered in blood and another close to the scene.
The blue Kia is spotted metres away from where the accident took place. The vehicle is smashed against the pavement and someone can be seen trying to assist the driver.
When Daily Voice contacted Western Cape spokesperson for the Western Cape South African Taxi Council (Santaco) Mandla Hermanus for comment, he said that they were not aware of the accident.
Bella Bantom commented on the Facebook post and said: “Rest in peace to my aunt and to those who lost their lives this morning. We have a lot of questions why but only God knows best. Condolences from my family to yours.”
Angela Goliath commented: “They (taxis) are driving recklessly forcing other road users off the road, overtaking anywhere. (They) pass you on your left side and even climb pavements to get past you. They are a danger to themselves and other law-abiding road users.”
