KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli has extended his condolences and pledged government support to families affected by last week’s torrential downpours, that resulted in nine fatalities across the province.
The province was battered by heavy rainfall that triggered mudslides and caused structural collapses, with eThekwini experiencing the highest number of casualties.
On Tuesday morning, Premier Ntuli visited the worst-hit areas in the metro, meeting with bereaved families and outlining the government’s intervention efforts.
“Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy,” said Mr Ntuli.
“We stand in solidarity with them, ensuring they receive the necessary support during this difficult time.”
The premier assured affected residents that the provincial government would assist with funeral arrangements and provide temporary shelter for those who lost their homes. “The Executive Council has swiftly resolved to provide urgent interventions for displaced families and those impacted by the devastating floods,” read a statement from his office.
Mr Ntuli also highlighted the increasing frequency of floods in KwaZulu-Natal, saying there was an urgent need for proactive measures. “Families must move away from high-risk areas,” he stated. “Government cannot make that choice for them; it is crucial that communities decide to relocate to safer locations.”
He further urged traditional leaders to assess the safety of land before allocating residential areas, as continued habitation in flood-prone zones places lives at risk.
Expressing condolences to the families of the victims, Mr Ntuli specifically mentioned the Shozi, Nkwanyane, and Mhlongo families, who lost loved ones after a wall collapse caused by the heavy rains. The Department of Social Development has been assigned to provide psychosocial support to those grieving.
