Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen launched his exhibition, Cosmopolitan Renaissance, at Zenview in Hout Bay on Tuesday February 11. It includes bronze sculptures and photographs that explore seeing beauty in the obscure. Vanmechelen’s Medusa offers a new interpretation of the ancient Greek myth. “I’m interested in highlighting a new symbolism. For example, in Greek mythology, when you look at the Medusa, you turn to stone, but I wanted to re-imagine her significance because when the doctors want to treat someone from a snakebite they actually use the poison, which is the anti-venom,” he said.
