The sinkhole that appeared at the intersection of Brighton Street and Milner Avenue following a pipe burst.
Municipal workers have repaired a burst pipe that caused a sinkhole in a Hout Bay road on Tuesday morning.
A vehicle hit the hole at the intersection of Brighton Street and Milner Avenue, according to ward councillor Roberto Quintas, but it wasn’t clear by time of publication whether anyone had been injured in the incident.
"The sinkhole has not been closed yet as there will need to be remedial work done. However, the hole is cordoned off with traffic cones, and no deviations are required,“ Mr Quintas said.
City water and sanitation staff repaired the burst pipe on the same day, according to mayoral committee member for water and sanitation Zahid Badroodien.
“The water supply to the affected surrounding areas has been restored. Reinstatement of the road will be done by the relevant teams. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route until reinstatement is complete. Every effort will be made to complete the repairs in the shortest and safest timeframe,“ Dr Badroodien said.
He added that the municipal workers who repaired the burst pipe had also replaced three gaskets on the pressure-reducing valve on Empire Road, which supplies water to Milner Avenue.
Hout Bay is plagued by frequent pipe bursts, and the City is busy with a programme to replace ageing pipes in the area (“More water pipe bursts in Hout Bay,” April 19).
“While critical pipe replacement is under way on water infrastructure, frequent pipe bursts caused by the water-pressure system and aged water-supply infrastructure have resulted in residents experiencing recurring water supply disruptions,” the City said in a previous statement.
