High school pupils painted a mural at Sentinel Primary School commemorating Madiba’s legacy for Mandela Day on Thursday July 18.

The Grade 10 pupils from Hout Bay and Silikamva high schools are part of a leadership programme called the legacy project, run by the non-profit Lalela arts programme, says the programme’s manager, Rowan Roman.

Sentinel Primary School pupils also got stuck in and helped with the mural.

The mural was about doing something positive for the community and motivating “the next cohort of leaders”, said Mr Roman.

“The design is a beautiful ode, not only to the tireless efforts of Nelson Mandela, but to the country as a whole,“ he said.

“I wanted to become a leader because I want to inspire positive change, empower people, and make an impact that is lasting,” said one of the pupils, Yolanda Nazombe.

Sentinel Primary did not respond to questions by deadline.

Sentinel Primary Grade 5 pupils Elsie Nderere and Zubair Radloff helped with the mural.
