Two Hout Bay film-makers whose documentary has been selected for screening at a film festival in Italy next month are seeking help to get there.
Mandilakhe – Let Me Build, by Wonga Lucas, 28, and Adriaan Madikisa, 32, explores the wage gap in Hout Bay through the eyes of Imizamo Yethu resident Mandilakhe Chuku, and it was chosen for screening at a UK film festival late last year (“Hout Bay doccie to screen at UK film festival,” Sentinel, December 2023).
According to Mr Lucas, the film has now also been selected for the African Diaspora Cinema Festival, taking place at the Villa Romana, in Florence, from Thursday June 27 to Sunday June 30.
“It’s always an honour to know your project has been selected for a film festival. Sadly, funding is a always a problem with such projects as your film could be shown in Florence, Italy but it doesn’t always mean that your flight is paid for. We would love to attend, but, unfortunately, funding is not available,” said Mr Lucas.
Mr Madikisa said: “Our film has been shown at quite a few festivals already, which I’m proud of, but there’s nothing really tangible in it until we’ve proposed the next project. This is important when pitching to producers so that they are aware of the different festivals where our film was screened.”
