Intshayelelo Primary School pupils take part in Freedom Day celebrations.
Intshayelelo Primary School in Khayelitsha was a hive of Freedom Day activities on Friday.
Headmaster Mxolisi Mbobo explained the history behind the day.
“This the thirtieth anniversary since the country obtained its freedom. Before that only white people were allowed to vote,” said Mr Mbobo.
Social sciences teacher Aubrey Shoko said it was important to teach children about the history of the country.
“They must know where we come from. Today is different from the past. Yes, we do have political freedom but we are economically struggling,” said Mr Shoko.
He said through debates they are able to teach children about the imbalances, the common service delivery protests and active citizenry participation.
Working with final year UCT Health Sciences students, pupils took part in an arts club project. The project was rolled out to 10 other local schools including Sivuyiseni Primary School and Cosat.
Student supervisor Zenzo Chakara said the project gave UCT students a chance to impart skills to township pupils.
Natasha Ndlovu one of those facilitating the project said they have seen a massive improvement in reading and class participation in the pupils who took part.
Teacher Nosicelo Mahamba said the Freedom Day event revealed that the “children have enormous talent”.
“We witnessed a day of jubilation as our children displayed acting, singing and debating skills to mark the milestone of 30 years of democratic government,” said Ms Mahamba.
Grade 8 pupil Sinothando Sonandi said he was delighted to learn about the country’s history.
“I now know why we have a beautiful flag because many people died to fight for freedom,” said Sinothando.
