Durban – The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has pledged to help tackle the delays in assisting flood victims.
The DA and the SAHRC met on Monday after the party handed over a memorandum of demands to the Chapter Nine institution earlier this month regarding the poor living conditions of flood victims in eThekwini mass care centres.
DA leader in KZN Francois Rodgers said the commission expressed its frustration and disappointment at the slow response by government departments and municipalities across the province.
“This despite both KZN’s Human Settlements Department and the eThekwini Municipality receiving additional emergency funding in order to assist flood victims.”
Rodgers said KZN flood victims had been pushed from pillar to post for more than seven months.
“This while government continues to over-promise and under-deliver.”
Rodgers said the SAHRC had pledged to work with the DA.
“The DA will continue to engage with the SAHRC in the days ahead. We will not allow this ANC administration to abandon its responsibility,” he said.
