WHAT I am about to write is going to come across as brutal, insulting, and perhaps even rude, but bear with me.
In the 1990 comedy Crazy People, Dudley Moore plays an advertising executive whose coworkers start believing that job stress is affecting his performance and his mental health, and they have him admitted to a mental hospital.
One of the red flags for his colleagues was when Emory Leeson (played by Moore) unveils an advert for Volvo.
His ad features the slogan: “Buy Volvos. They’re boxy but they’re good” followed by the hook that reads: “We know they’re not sexy. This is not a smart time to be sexy anyway, with so many diseases around. Be safe instead of sexy.”
This makes his partner toss all his toys out of the cot. And, for the record, I would do the same thing.
Here’s why: I love and always have loved Volvos. Growing up, and even today, when I see a Volvo on the road my heart gives an extra blip.
Of course, Volvo is renowned for its exceptional safety, durability, and innovative technology. I remember commercials in magazines that emphasised the manufacturer’s strong focus on driver and passenger protection. In fact, Volvo pioneered features like the three-point seatbelt and advanced collision avoidance systems. Now that’s impressive.
Also, the Swedish craftsmanship combined with cutting-edge engineering, means that Volvo consistently delivers a smooth, secure, and comfortable driving experience.
And for those who still think of Volvos as “boxy” think again. Because now the land of IKEA, Abba, meatballs and Vikings introduces the Volvo ES90.
Its shape is so unique that it’s said that while some might say it is a sedan, others will see a fastback, or even hints of an SUV.
But you can be the final judge – all we know is that the new, fully electric Volvo ES90 carves out a new space for itself by eliminating the compromises between those three segments, which puts it in a class of its own.
In unveiling its latest all-electric model, the ES90, a car that blends the elegance of a sedan with the practicality of an SUV, Volvo has designed a vehicle for both adventure and everyday life. The ES90 offers plenty of space, premium comfort, and cutting-edge technology – all while staying true to Volvo’s reputation for safety.
Power, Range, and Speed
The ES90 is Volvo’s first electric car with 800V technology, meaning faster charging and longer range than ever before. It can add up to 300 km of range in just 10 minutes, with a full charge offering up to 700 km of driving distance.
Designed for Comfort and Convenience
Step inside, and you’ll find a luxurious, quiet cabin with high-quality materials and plenty of legroom – ideal for both families and road trips.
Features like a panoramic sunroof, advanced air purification, and ambient lighting make every drive more enjoyable. The large tailgate and flexible seating also mean you’ll have plenty of space for luggage or gear.

Next-Level Tech for an Effortless Drive
The ES90 comes with Google built-in, allowing access to Google Maps, voice commands, and apps right from the car’s large touchscreen. A 360-degree camera helps with parking, while the Bowers & Wilkins sound system delivers an incredible audio experience – including an option that mimics the acoustics of Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded, nogal!
A New Standard in Safety
Volvo’s legendary safety features are at the heart of the ES90.
The car's sensor set enables vision beyond human range to help avoid collisions and hazards on the road. The ES90 also has Volvo’s pioneering driver understanding system as standard, which can detect when the driver’s attention is no longer focused on the road; the car is able to step in to support. But remember, this is still no reason to have your cellphone in your nad while driving.
Furthermore, Volvo’s Safe Space Technology not only supports you when driving, but also when you’re parked.
The door opening alert in the ES90 helps to look out for and protect cyclists or pedestrians passing by when you open the doors. And when you’re about to leave the car, the ES90’s full-cabin occupant sensing is there to help you avoid leaving loved ones behind.
Get this: it can sense submillimetre scale movement, such as the soft breathing of a baby.
Available Now
The Volvo ES90 is available to order in several countries, now in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Other markets will be added later this year and into 2026.
And I hope it comes to our shores, just so that I can look at it and drool.
There is small print though
