SUZUKI has launched its all-new, and spunkier-looking Swift in South Africa, along with a new version of the Dzire sedan.
As before both cars are offered in three 1.2-litre petrol variants. Both ranges include a 1.2 GA base model and a more comprehensively equipped GL version, with the GL available in either five-speed manual or in two-pedal guise with an automated manual transmission. The GA versions are sold in five-speed manual only.
The 1.2-litre normally aspirated petrol engine produces 61kW and 113Nm, which is 2kW less than before, but the new Swift more than makes up for that with a kerb weight that’s about 85kg lighter - tipping the scales at a paltry 875kg. Similarly, the Dzire sedan has shed 75kg of mass and is down to 890kg.
The fuel consumption for both hatch and sedan is claimed at 4.9 litres per 100 km in a combined cycle, giving Suzuki’s new B-segment cars a range of over 750 km on their 37-litre tanks.
Built on Suzuki’s new ‘Heartect’ platform that also underpins the Ignis and Baleno, the 2018 Swift and Dzire get longer wheelbases and better packaging to offer more passenger room and boot space.
SWIFT
The boot capacity has grown 58 litres to a truly decent 268 litres.
All models in the range are well stocked, featuring all the basics like aircon, remote central locking, power steering, front and rear electric windows, ABS brakes and dual airbags.
The base version does look a little skimpy, however, with its plain steel wheels, and the budget model is also missing a radio.
The upper-specced Swift 1.2 GL does get an audio system and it’s quite a decent one with Bluteooth as well as a CD player and USB/aux connectivity. In addition the GL has a multi function steering wheel, electric mirrors, a split folding rear seat to expand the boot area, and fog lights.
The GL also has perked-up styling with blacked-out A and B pillars, and body-coloured mirrors with turn signals. The wheels are steel but they get attractive plastic covers.
DZIRE
The new Dzire sedan also offers significantly more passenger and boot space than its predecessor.
Shoulder room inside the cabin has increased and rear passengers get a sizeable 55mm more legroom than before, while the boot has increased by 78 litres to 378 litres.
All Dzire models are equipped with aircon, front and rear electric windows, airbags for the driver and front passenger, a tilt-adjustable steering column, a security alarm and immobiliser and ISOFIX anchor points for rear-fitted child seats.
The GL-specification level adds rear air vents and an additional 12V socket, a Suzuki audio system with Bluetooth and USB connectivity, front fog lamps, colour-coded electrically adjustable side mirrors and steering-mounted audio controls. This specification level is also fitted with high-grade upholstery with rear foldable armrest with integrated cup holders.
