Advertorial: Call for waste proposals

Advertorial - Proposals are invited from interested waste management and recycling companies who have the capacity and capabilities to participate in the recycling enterprise development programme.

The Recycling Enterprise Development Programme (REDP) is an initiative that was launched by Hon Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa along with the MECs for environment in the nine (9) provinces. The intention of the REDP is to support the establishment of at least two recycling companies per province over the next two years.

At the Waste Summit held in 2015, the main theme was 'war on waste: driving the recycling economy in South Africa', and how we can play an active role in accelerating the recycling economy.

The legislative framework that provides context and rationale for this programme is as follows:

" The National Environmental Management: Waste Amendment Act, 2014 (Act 26 of 2014);

" National Pricing Strategy for Waste Management Charges as developed in terms of Section 13A of the National Environmental Management: Waste Amendment Act, 2014 read in conjunction with Section 28 of the Waste Act, 2008 (Act 59 of 2008);

" Waste Tyre Regulations, 2008; and

" National Environmental Waste Management Waste Act, 2008 (Act 59 of 2008).

Amongst the numerous environmental challenges currently facing the country, the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) has long prioritised waste management as a focus area that deserves attention. The waste sector has been identified as one of the critical sectors with the potential to contribute substantially to the generation of jobs within the green economy. It is in this light that the Department is increasingly expanding its programmes relating to job creation as well as enterprise development programmes within the waste sector.

The Department hereby invites proposals from interested Waste Management and Recycling Companies who have the capacity and capabilities to participate in the Recycling Enterprise Development Programme.

The Department therefore seeks to solicit proposals from interested companies with significant participation by women, youth and people living with disabilities who have the capacity and capabilities to participate in the REDP.

" Preference will be given to Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDI);

" Successful candidates will be selected for support on the Recycling Enterprise Development Programme; and
